Leather is the reason a boot gets better instead of older. Mollini works in full grain and nappa across the boots collection, in black, brown and tan, cut into shapes that hold their line through a season and then several more.
Full grain leather keeps the outer surface of the hide, which is the strongest part of it. That is why a full grain boot resists water, creases along the lines your foot makes rather than cracking, and develops a patina that reads as history instead of wear. Corrected grain is sanded smooth and finished, so it looks uniform on day one and stays exactly that way without ever becoming yours. Nappa is the softer proposition, supple enough to be comfortable from the first wear. Look at the lining too. Leather breathes across a day indoors where a textile lining holds damp, and a stitched sole can be replaced when a glued one cannot. Brown leather boots have become the more useful pair for a lot of wardrobes, because brown warms denim, camel and cream in a way black does not. Chocolate is formal enough for work, tan is lighter and carries into spring, and both deepen with wear rather than fading. Height decides the rest. Ankle boots in brown leather are the pair you will reach for most. Knee high boots need a closer calf fit, and in good leather the shaft moulds to the leg within a few wears and stays there. A: Wipe off salt and dirt after wear, condition the leather two or three times through the season, and use a protector spray before the first outing. Let wet boots dry at room temperature away from heaters, since direct heat stiffens and cracks the leather. A: It depends what else is in the wardrobe. Black suits darker and city-leaning dressing, while brown works better with denim, camel, cream and other warm neutrals. Many people find brown the more useful first pair. A: Yes, a little. Leather moulds to the foot across the first few wears and a shaft relaxes slightly against the calf. Buy for a firm rather than tight fit, since leather will give but will not shrink back. A: Full grain leather retains the outer surface of the hide rather than sanding it smooth. It is the most durable grade, resists water better than corrected grain, and ages into a patina instead of wearing through."What you are actually buying
